"Denette and Joel Johnston traveled from Owensboro to Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital with their adult special needs son after a severe health incident left him on a ventilator and paralyzed. "As we walked off the elevator on the floor where Jay would stay, we saw the Hospitality House poster. It was as if all the needed resources just came together for us."

Welcome to the Hospitality House

Every day, as many as 50 percent of The Medical Center and Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital patients come from outside Warren County for care including cardiac, cancer, orthopaedic and neonatology services. On average, these patients spend nearly five days in the hospital, and patients of Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital - a long term acute care hospital within The Medical Center - stay an average of 25 days. These patients and their caregivers are confronted with many care and treatment decisions. Often underestimated during this time are the financial burdens associated with a family member's illness or injury - the added expense of travel, food, lodging, out-of-pocket medical expenses, and the possibility of loss or reduction in wages.

Lodging can be difficult to afford when a family member must be in the hospital for an extended time. The Hospitality House is meeting this basic need by accommodating the primary caregivers of critically ill patients and some outpatients receiving intensive therapeutic care.

About the Hospitality House

Located on the campus of The Medical Center, the Hospitality House has 12 private guestrooms with baths, a large kitchen, dining room, prayer room, community room with comfortable furnishings, and a business center with computers and Internet service. The house provides "a home away from home" where patients' families can eat, sleep and take care of even the most mundane daily tasks such as laundry. The Hospitality House also provides emotional support to families. There is not a charge to stay at the Hospitality House; however, donations to help support the operation of the house are gratefully accepted.

Primary caregivers of hospital inpatients or patients receiving certain intensive outpatient therapies are evaluated for temporary housing at the Hospitality House. Each situation is looked at individually.

The Hospitality House was constructed through community support for Med Center Health Foundation's EXTENDING HOME Capital Campaign. If you would like to lend your support to the Hospitality House, learn more about Ways to Give.
